Intended Audience

​The Basic Life Support course is intended for healthcare professionals, workplace first aiders, carers, and members of the public who require the knowledge and practical skills to respond to life-threatening emergencies, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the safe use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), in accordance with current UK Resus guidelines

Course Aims

 

The aim of the Basic Life Support course is to provide learners with the knowledge, confidence, and practical skills required to recognise and respond to life-threatening emergencies, including performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and using an automated external defibrillator (AED), in line with current UK Resuscitation Council guidelines.

Course Length 

 

3 Hours classroom Based learning with Theory and Practical Elements

 

Assessment

 

Ongoing Practical Assessment with a shorth Theory Paper

 

Qualification Validity

 

This Course is valid 1 Years from the issuing of the certificate

Course Entry Requirement

  • Learners should be a minimum of 14 years to undertake this qualification

  • Learners between 14-16 years can undertake the qualification, however they should not be relied upon by employers to be a sole emergency first aider.

  • Learners must have sufficient command of the English language to understand and undertake the recommended assessment methods for this qualification.

  • Learners must demonstrate Basic Life Support procedures as part of their assessment, including providing CPR to a casualty on the floor. Therefore, learners must be physically capable of performing CPR on the floor.

  • There are no other pre-requisites for this qualification.

Course Content

  • Demonstrate how to approach primary survey sequence

  • Identify when, and administer, appropriate to perform CPR 

  • Identify when, and how to operate  AED (Defibrillator)

  • Identify when to put someone in the recovery position and demonstrate the process

  • Identifying mild and severe choking and how to administer first aid.
