Emergency Anaphylaxis Management

Intended Audience

Anaphylaxis training is intended for anyone responsible for the safety of others in environments where severe allergic reactions could occur and who may need to use an adrenaline auto-injector in an emergency. Anaphylaxis training is aimed at anyone who may need to recognise and respond to severe allergic reactions and/or administer emergency treatment (usually an adrenaline auto-injector) in a workplace or care setting.

It is commonly designed for:

• School staff (teachers, teaching assistants, SEN staff)

• Nursery and early years workers

• Childminders and childcare providers

• Sports coaches and activity leaders working with children or young people

• Youth workers and club leaders

• Care home staff and domiciliary carers

• Healthcare support staff (non-clinical roles)

• Workplace first aiders in environments where allergies are a known risk

• Hospitality staff (kitchens, restaurants, food service roles with allergy risks)

• Security or event staff where emergency response may be needed

These roles are targeted because they may:

• Supervise individuals with known severe allergies

• Be responsible for administering emergency treatment before paramedics arrive

• Work in environments where allergen exposure is possible (food, latex, insect stings, etc.)

• Have legal or employer responsibilities under workplace risk assessments

• People with no duty of care responsibilities

• General public looking for basic first aid awareness only

• Clinical professionals already trained in emergency allergy management (though they may still take refresher training depending on workplace policy)

The main aims of anaphylaxis training are to ensure learners can recognise, respond to, and manage a severe allergic reaction quickly and safely, often before emergency services arrive.

This Course is valid 1 Years from the issuing of the certificate

 

Learner entry requirements

 

• No prior knowledge, skills, understanding or qualifications are required to undertake this qualification are outlined below:

 

• Learners should be a minimum of 14 years to undertake this qualification

 

• Learners between 14-16 years can undertake the qualification, however they should not be relied upon by employers to be a sole emergency first aider.

 

• Learners must have sufficient command of the English language to understand and undertake the recommended assessment methods for this qualification

 

• Learners must demonstrate first aid procedures as part of their assessment, including providing CPR to a casualty on the floor. Therefore, learners must be physically capable of performing CPR on the floor.

 

• There are no other pre-requisites for this qualification

Understanding anaphylaxis

​

• What anaphylaxis is (severe, life-threatening allergic reaction)

• Difference between mild allergy and anaphylaxis

• Common causes and triggers

​

🚨 Recognition of symptoms

​

• Skin reactions (hives, swelling, flushing)

• Breathing difficulties (wheezing, throat tightness)

• Swelling of face, lips, tongue

• Dizziness or collapse

• Gastrointestinal symptoms (vomiting, abdominal pain)

• Signs of shock

📞 Emergency response steps

​

• Assessing the situation safely

• Calling emergency services (999/112)

• Placing casualty in correct position (lying down unless breathing is difficult)

• Monitoring airway, breathing, and circulation

💉 Adrenaline auto-injector (AAI) use

​

• Types of devices (e.g. EpiPen, Jext, Emerade)

• When to use an AAI

• How to administer correctly

• Second dose guidance (if required and trained policy allows)

• Aftercare and disposal of used device
